Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, which he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that showed that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Prices rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
