Our Top Release of 2025: The Artist's Masterpiece Claims the Number One Place.

Initially, this work might appear more like a difficult academic challenge than a new pop project from an artist whose previous hit featured a global K-pop icon. Divided across 4 distinct parts and performed in thirteen languages, we have a breathtaking symphonic album investigating feminine mystery, religious transcendence, and corporal change, often through the perspective of various female saints. The end of a love affair—a theme treated with grounded openness on another major 2025 album—is launched heavenward here, carried by the constant sound of a major symphony orchestra and input from an award-winning songwriter within an extensive list of collaborators. The pure daring alone makes the work of other pop stars seem rather small.

Rising Above Academic Exercise

The fact that Lux manages to transcend overly academic chin-stroking feels nearly a miracle, and sole praise going to the artist. Although it's not her first album to blend the past with modern styles, the ambitions are much higher here, with the tightrope walk more dramatic. What truly raises her fourth album, beyond its multilayered melodies, dense compositions, and engrained drama, proves to be a core sense of joy. Much like the legendary Björk during her height, there is a wondrous sense to Rosalía's singing which sweeps the listener into its whirlwind. Even when she's tearing hearts apart, you still want to be right there for the ride.

A Signature Example of Joy

That playful spirit comes forth brightly on a stunning Italian ballad about Saint Clare. It bathes in a string-drenched melancholy over more than four moments. Suddenly, everything drops silent, and we hear a gleeful laugh followed by a comment before a comically over-the-top orchestral surge crashes in like comedic force. The track immediately segues to the frenetic track featuring racing strings, an imposing choir, and a surprise appearance from none other than herself.

"The magic of Lux lies in you never exactly know—or even wish to predict—where it will go next."

Nearly each track ends at a totally distinct place from where it began. One moment examines the fleeting nature of celebrity over a featherlight symphony only to disintegrating in digital chaos. Elsewhere, a cut echoing her previous trap-infused style starts out moody and brooding, featuring menacing beats, until sudden flamenco handclaps and an angelic chorus arrive to smooth the song's jagged edges.

The Balance Of Experiment & Pop

A key achievement of the album is navigating the gap of bold experimentation and mainstream accessibility. This is no surprise that the album has become the artist's first work to crack the upper reaches of key charts: at its core a collection of utterly undeniable pop songs. A song sung primarily in the English language swells around a refrain that feels to gather increasingly infectious melodies while it spirals upward. That trick is echoed by another expansive track that expands and constricts, intertwining multiple melodies like a complex weave.

  • A dance-infused number seduces with its jaunty, theatrical flair and a chant-along chorus.
  • Lyrically, it shares with cultural honesty of contemporary heartbreak anthems, lambasting an ex- lover labeled an "psychological terrorist".
  • Across the album, the vocals carry a painted-on edge, like a fairy-tale figure hiding a knife: "Gold medal in being a scoundrel / You've won the trophy of letdown."

An Opulent Feast for the Ears

This album is popular music on a maximalist level, a hungry reach for capital-A artistry in an era of looming artificial sameness. It eschews solipsism in favor of sublime transcendence, creating an over-the-top spectacle that masterfully manages its built-in excess. This is an abundant well of buried treasure that requires time to completely mine but never feels like hard work. While other major releases of 2025 felt like a meager meal, this record is a sumptuous feast at which the characters at the table, perhaps tipsy on sacred drink, flit between conversations about historical saints, the profound sensation of soul-shattering sadness, and common gossip about hopeless men. In essence, it's a modern-day theatrical production from pop's most endlessly inventive visionary.
