Right-leaning responses to the partial disclosure of documents involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in images, while different voices expressed frustration over how extensive redactions cast former President Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable light.
Justice Department Defends Censorship with Strong Rhetoric
Justice Department officials defended the heavily censored sections with intense exaggerated language. “Never in U.S. the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been so open with the American people about such a delicate legal matter,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter describing the redaction process.
Questions Prompted by Redactions
While the former president's name and likeness are visible in portions of the materials, the extensive redactions raise serious questions about what may be hidden behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately demanded increased openness.
“The public are furious and walking away,” posted Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions break the statute, and suggested that a subsequent Congress may attempt to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump grossly fails to comply with both the intent and the letter of the act,” he added.
A Faction of Conservative Commentators Swing In Support of the Disclosure
However, some conservative pundits and Trump allies swung firmly behind the administration.
The disclosed materials—from a justice department led by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are completely censored, and many of the men shown in pictures have their faces obscured.
Yet some do not, featuring high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, allowed some rightwing figures to go on the offensive.
“This is pretty ironic how the Democrats wrongly claimed Donald Trump of being a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“New documents show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a woman that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one explanation Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Releases Response
Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of zero illegal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The administration hasn’t been hiding these documents for months only to dump them late on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“This is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from what they will try and hide permanently. Therefore they can release as many low-quality decades-old photographs as they desire, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement added.
Broader Conservative Commentary Remains Muted
However, broader comment on the political right was relatively subdued following the release, especially when compared with the vociferous demands for transparency that came before the congressional vote to enact a bill mandating the files' publication.
Loomer, who not long ago secured press credentials at the Pentagon, had been among the loudest advocates for a complete release. In February, she chastised the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of conservative influencers were provided physical binders of materials that contained no new information.
