The former Brazilian president detained after being considered a risk of fleeing

The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was convicted of plotting a military coup in the ninth month and given more than over two decades in jail, but he was staying under confinement pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after recent developments emerged.

This encompassed trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His son, Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a assembly of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.

The senator wrote on online platforms on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I call on you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could "pray for his health and for the return of democracy in our land."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the possibility of the former president's "relocation to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a history of planning to seek refuge through a embassy office", a announcement said.

The judicial paperwork underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, Brasilia, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.

Worldwide Consequences

His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist US President President Trump, leading him to impose a 50% tariff on imports of Brazilian goods.

He is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will experience a detention review on the following day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the Top Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with tracking devices.

They also asked that he be allowed to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he needed frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other health problems.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was found guilty of orchestrating a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plot which included plans to kill Lula and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was stopped because it failed to get the backing of the armed forces officials. Lula was sworn in without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, many his backers invaded and destroyed public facilities in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The law enforcement took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The justices found that the rioters had been provoked by him whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from running for public office until 2060 - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The one-time head of state called the court case a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the 2026 national vote.
